Reviews / NENAH CHERRY / PRINCE ALBERT, BRIGHTON / 1/ 5/ 015

Neneh Cherry gets intimate at the Prince Albert Brighton for two sold out shows for forthcoming live worldwide streamed London show.

Itís hard to believe that 27 years have passed since Neneh Cherry hit the charts with Buffalo Stance and album Raw Like Sushi and in the cramped surroundings upstairs at the Prince Albert to a worked up crowd of over 100 patrons who were treated to new material that showcased the excellent musicianship of accompanying band Rocketnumbernine to wonderful effect. What was evident was how contemporary the new songs sounded allowing atmosphere to shine through each song. Introducing mainly new material from current album "Blank Project" her first solo release in 18 years and with brothers Tom and Ben Page on drums and keyboards respectively who trade under the name of the aforementioned Rocketnumbernine excelled with skill and verve.

The second of two sold out warm up shows for the forthcoming live streamed performance at London's Electric Ballroom Cherry started off a little tentatively but it wasn't long before both performer and crowd were in unison. What was evident was how her vocals have matured over the years, from a whisper to a growl whenever the mood allowed and how well it suited the new material.

Man Child and Buffalo Stance were given a fresh new impetus and sounded timeless in their delivery. The dynamic between Cherry and drummer Tom Page was spellbinding, at times economical and light in sound to a full blast heavy onslaught that hailed back to her post punk roots. Time has been good to Neneh Cherry both visually and musically. Rather than a relic from a bygone age resigned to living off past glories and going through the motions of yesteryear this new project is refreshingly vibrant and current and in many cases relevant.
